Chapter 1: Preformulation Studies
Preformulation testing is the initial phase in drug product development where physical, chemical, and mechanical properties of a new drug candidate are profiled.
Evaluation Parameters:
- Polymorphism: Characterization by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Powder X-Ray Diffraction (PXRD). Metastable polymorphs exhibit higher aqueous dissolution rates.
- Micromeritics: Particle size, Angle of Repose (\(\tan \theta = h/r\)), Carr's Compressibility Index, Hausner Ratio.
